Awesome Gaming Laptop
July 16, 2017

I was recently leaning toward ordering the new Dell 15 Inspiron 7000 with the 1050Ti card and 128 GB SSD. But then I saw the reviews for the Acer Predator Helios 300 with a 1060 card and 256 GB SSD. I was a little bit worried about the quality of the laptop based on some of the reviews here, but I can tell you almost everything about this computer is awesome. I've been playing games over the past two days, and it works flawlessly. No problems with the hardware or software. As soon as I started up the computer and went through the basic set up, I went to the Acer website and updated the BIOs and the Nvidia drivers. No problem whatsoever. I did order the Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD - I will install it in the extra drive port (or whatever you call it!).

Based on my experience I don't know what all the bad complaints are about. They seem childish - for the price this laptop is not going to be the best in the world. Grow up! Complaints about... read more
Easily Best Laptop for the Money
June 25, 2017

I am amazed at what you get for this price point.

-GTX 1060 easily pushes 1080p monitor
-Cooling seems to do a good job
-Quality build
-m.2 is PCIe/NVMe compatible
-free 2.5" bay with mounting included
-Matte screen
-Not too bulky

Cons (I gonna really reach here, no reason to complain at this price):
-Single USB 3 port
-USB C is NOT thunderbolt 3
-finger prints show easily on metal exterior

The build quality is instantly obvious. It is well made both in material quality as well as design. The first thing I did after unboxing was create a backup using a USB 3 stick which took ~1 hour. After that I opened it up and replaced the 256GB m.2 SATA SSD with a Samsung 960 EVO Series - 500GB NVMe - M.2 Internal SSD (MZ-V6E500BW) drive. The process was a little difficult as I wasnt sure how to get the base off after unscrewing all 15-16 screws. As it turns out, with the base... read more
Best gaming laptop in the $1000 price range
June 11, 2017

I had been looking around for a while at many different gaming laptops, planning to get one for sure, but was really on the fence about which one to get. I looked at all of the MSi, Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Sabre, etc. and to be honest, all these companies had great gaming laptops to offer for around the $1000 price point I was looking for. And I would hope that anyone looking for a gaming laptop in this price range would understand that companies are going to make compromises to reach that price range. All of the gaming laptops from all of these companies are great for this price range, and they all make their compromises in different areas of their laptops to reach that point. Ultimately though, most all of the other ones I looked at for this price were making their compromise in the the form of the GPU, stepping them down to the GTX 1050ti instead of the 1060 to try and cut costs. This was the only one that I found that still included the GTX 1060, and a 6gb one at that! No,... read more
Perfect tool for those that need *stationary* power when away from their PC
May 23, 2017

Works perfectly for what I needed it -- a stationary performance beast when going somewhere for a few weeks/months. A bit bigger than expected, but I didn't get this laptop for portability.
The Acer Predator Helios 300 is the cheapest GTX 1060 laptop out there with 6GB and it's SOLID!

Customer Video Review (Video length - 11:50 mins)
The Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop is a powerful laptop at a competitive price point.

EDIT #2 5/23/17: Nvidia has released a new driver and installing them HAS been achieved. Running the newest drivers at this point. Star re-added.

EDIT 5/21/17: The Stock Nvidia drivers on this machine that come pre installed are the ones you "Have" to use for now (they are months old), the machine will not accept a fresh install of new drivers for the version of the GTX 1060 that Acer has in this machine. This is an annoyance at best. The drivers are so old that Battlefield 1 will not play (it requires newer drivers) I am sure Acer will fix this at some point and hopefully soon. I am docking a star because of this and will edit again when it is resolved.

It's a beast!
May 14, 2017

Update: This morning the Nvidia 1060 seems to have failed (turns out not to be true, see below) less than a month after getting the laptop. It runs fine on the integrated Intel graphics, but it no longer thinks the 1060 even exists, so that's disappointing. I will now see what Acer's fancy Predator support will do for me.

Update to Update: After trying lots of things, I looked at the event log in Device Manager, and it showed a driver install event two days ago (two entries in the Event log: "Driver service added (nvlddmkm)", "Device installed (nvac.inf)") so something updated something automagically. Now looking at Windows Update, Update History, under Driver Updates it shows "NVIDIA - Display - 5/1/2017 12:00:00 AM -, Failed to install on 5.31.2017" . I used the Roll Back Driver option in Device Manager and it started working again! So not a hardware issue at all, but some issue with Windows Update screwing with drivers for it for... read more

Edited, because it could be better after 10 days...
May 19, 2017

EDIT: I've owned the laptop for 10 days now and have put it through it's paces. I did end up coming up with a few points everyone should know that I'll list below.

The first thing to know is that you're going to need to update your laptop's firmware. Go to the Acer support site and download the 1.2 AND 1.3 updates for your firmware (which they incorrectly label as a BIOS update). Update to 1.2 *first*, then update to 1.3. That'll solve a lot of stuttering and freezing you will come across, for example when a UAC prompt comes up.

Next, I did reinstall a fresh copy of Windows to help with the stability of the system. I did this by using Rufus to make a Windows 10 installer USB (use Google for instructions). I then had to hit Start, Settings, Update, Recovery, and reboot into UEFI Settings mode. I disabled SecureBoot so I could boot the USB media, installed a fresh copy of Windows 10, then went back into the UEFI settings to re-enable SecureBoot using the .efi file... read more
